An Outdoor Eilean Donan Castle Wedding… With a Side of Midges

When a couple falls head over heels in love with Scotland, this wedding at Eilean Donan Castle was everything a Scottish celebration should be: breathtaking scenery, bagpipes echoing through the glens, heartfelt traditions, a ceilidh that went on long into the night… and yes, a healthy helping of Highland midges.

Elise and Alex travelled all the way from the United States to bring their friends and family to Scotland for a wedding adventure they’ll never forget. They embraced the culture, the traditions, and every bit of Highland charm with open arms. Their guests came ready to celebrate, explore and immerse themselves fully in Scottish hospitality.

A Highland Gathering at Eilean Donan

The day began at the Eilean Donan Apartments, which the couple had booked out so their families could relax and enjoy time together before the ceremony. By the afternoon, the anticipation was building as everyone prepared for the ceremony at the castle.

The arrival was pure fairytale. Elise, accompanied by her Maid of Honour, arrived by horse-drawn carriage, led by two magnificent white horses. As they crossed the bridge towards the castle, the atmosphere was set by the powerful rhythm of Clann An Drumma and the haunting melody of Grant Munro’s bagpipes. It was a proper Highland welcome.

A Ceremony Steeped in Tradition

With the weather playing ball, the ceremony took place outdoors overlooking the loch, framed by the dramatic backdrop of the castle. It doesn’t get much more atmospheric than that.

Traditional Scottish rituals were woven into the ceremony, including a handfasting and a quaich ceremony led by Elise’s uncle, adding a personal and deeply meaningful touch to the vows. Guests stood together surrounded by stunning views, Scottish music, and, naturally, a few midges joining in on the fun.

Celebrations Continue

After the ceremony, guests enjoyed drinks inside the castle before returning to the apartments for the wedding meal and evening festivities. The entertainment continued with more music from Clann An Drumma, Highland dancing, and beautiful Gaelic singing performed by two young girls from Fort William.

As night fell, the dance floor came alive. With the DJ keeping the energy high, guests of all ages joined in, including Elise’s grandmother, who absolutely owned the dance floor.

A Day to Remember

This was a day filled with laughter, love, incredible food, a dram or two of whisky, and the kind of memories that last a lifetime. From the breathtaking setting to the traditional music, heartfelt ceremony, and energetic celebrations, it was a true Highland wedding in every sense.
