Their story…
High school sweethearts Robyn and Nathan got engaged in Iceland when he went down on one knee under the Northern Lights, something the pair had dreamed about seeing for years.
“It was just the two of us and it was magical,” smiles the bride.
A self-confessed control freak, Robyn took the lead with planning and started searching for a very special venue.
“I was pretty much brought up in Dunbar as I’d visit there most weekends with my grandparents. I searched in that area, hoping I would feel I had my nana (who we lost a few years ago) close on the wedding day. I didn’t have any luck until I visited a wedding fair and it was like fate. Broxmouth was the last stall before the exit and I fell in love with not just where it was but the look of it too.”
After finding the perfect place to tie the knot, the couple looked for those who would document it and were delighted with their choices.
“Our photographer, David, was a massive part of our day and made our guests feel at ease. People still talk about how amazing and professional he was. TLC Media were fantastic to work with too and went so unnoticed on the day. We can’t wait to see the finished video.”
Not finding planning as stressful as expected – “I’d do it all again 100 times over!” – Robyn took on a lot, making her invitations, place cards, table numbers and seating charts herself. She also went for DIY décor, opting for a minimalist and elegant look that would let the gorgeous venue do the talking.
“I’ve never been a lover of colour so wanted neutral tones all round. I knew this would complement Broxmouth so much.”
The attire followed suit – quite literally, with Nathan rocking a beige suit and tie whilst the bride’s best gals were in ivory.
“I wanted them to feel as comfortable as possible so opted for made to measure, customisable dresses and let them choose what they loved most.”
They say it takes a village to plan a wedding and Robyn enlisted her family when it came to the cake, made by Nathan’s cousin Natalie, and the flowers.
“My great auntie, Mary, makes floral arrangements for a hobby and having her do this meant so much to me. We made memories I’ll never forget in the process and my flowers turned out exactly how I imagined, all because of her.”
The night before the wedding, Robyn and her girls worked hard decorating the venue then treated themselves to a relaxed night with McDonald’s and prosecco.
“I had my hair pin curled and chilled with my bridesmaids, my mum and my aunties. It was lovely,” she remembers.
She slept well – “I think I was exhausted from all the organising and decorating!” – and loved the chilled atmosphere in the morning, feeling like she had all the right people there to keep her calm.
As a make-up and brow artist, Robyn created a look that made her feel her best on the day whilst Beth Edwards “nailed” the make-up for the mums and ‘maids.
Her hair was done by her auntie Kimberley (as it had been for every other big event in her life), then she finally stepped into her subtly sparkly ballgown, complete with a beautiful train.
She accessorised with a fingertip veil, a tiara (“Because when will I ever get the chance to do that again?”) and Jimmy Choos she knew she’d wear over and over.
Robyn’s nerves hit her “like a tonne of bricks as she started to walk down the aisle but she managed to zone out and focus on Nathan, delighted to be reunited after missing him the night before.
“My wedding highlight was realising the day was finally here and I was about to marry my high school sweetheart,” she admits.
Having met other celebrants but not been able to find one that suited them as a couple, they opted for a “lovely” registrar to conduct their ceremony.
“We chose vows together that suited us and I’ll remember them forever. It was such a special moment.”
The newlyweds treated their 140 guests to a live singer during the drinks reception before sitting down for their “perfect” wedding breakfast and a set of sentimental speeches.
Both dads said a few words, as well as the best man and the maid of honour, Robyn’s sister.
The party vibe of the evening reception kicked off early with singing waiters and got even livelier when a DJ and sax player took to the stage for an hour of Ibiza classics.
“It was a room full of pure happiness. Everywhere I looked, every single person had a smile on their face,” remembers Robyn.
Whilst many brides (especially those who put this much thought and work into their big day) might be expecting post-wedding blues, it’s quite the opposite for Robyn who will soon have a new project to get to grips with
“Being married has made me feel complete. I know that although anything can happen in life, if we have each other that’s all that matters.
We now have another new chapter to look forward to, having found out on honeymoon in Las Vegas that we’re expecting our first baby. It’s such a blessing and we’re on cloud nine.”
